Ranked cards

Showing costs in EUR for a typical profile: EUR 500 a month, 30% in a foreign currency, rewards that need staking or a paid plan left out. Choose your country to see only the cards open to you, priced in your currency.

Complete estimates come first, then cards that leave out a fee the issuer does not list. Cards without a cost estimate come last, ordered by how many of their fees are verified.

Not checked yet

These cards are not ranked and have no cost estimate. We have not verified the facts that define this list, or where the card is available. Not checked does not mean no.

What self-custody means for a card

With self-custody, the card is linked to a wallet that only you can sign for. Nobody at the card company can move your funds without you. If the company stops operating, the card stops working, but your wallet and what is in it stay yours.

The payment itself works as it does for any card. A shop is paid in ordinary money, so something has to turn your crypto into that money when you tap. The issuer and the card network still sit between you and the shop, and the card can still be limited, blocked or closed on their side. Identity checks (KYC) can still apply, depending on the card and your country.

What you take on

Control comes with work and risk, and both land on you.

  • Keys and backups. If you lose your recovery phrase, nobody can reset it for you. If someone else gets it, they get your funds.
  • Setup. You need a wallet before you need a card, and linking the two takes more steps than opening an account.
  • Approvals and spending balances. Some cards ask you to approve a spending permission, or to move funds into a separate balance before you can pay. How much sits there, and for how long, decides how self-custodial the card really is in daily use.
  • Top-ups and networks. The assets and networks a card accepts decide how money gets from your wallet to the card. Sending on a network the card does not support can lose the funds.

Our guide to custodial and self-custody cards compares them in full. This page only lists the cards.

What is on this list and what is not

We go by the custody type on file for each card. Cards marked self-custody are ranked. Hybrid cards, where part of the setup is held by the company, and custodial cards, where the company holds your crypto, are left out. A card whose custody we have not checked is shown as not checked yet instead of being guessed.

Gnosis Pay, a self-custody card, closes on 20 December 2026 and is not ranked here. If you hold one, see alternatives to Gnosis Pay.

What to compare

  • Availability. A card is only useful if you can get it where you live. Eligibility is checked per country.
  • Assets and networks. Which assets the card takes from your wallet, and on which networks. The tiles in the list show the custody type and the supported assets.
  • FX fee and markup. The FX fee is listed. The FX markup hides in the rate. If you pay in other currencies, start from the no FX fee list.
  • Conversion spread. The conversion spread is the gap between the market price of your crypto and the price used when it is sold for the payment. Self-custody does not remove it.
  • Everyday costs. Issuance, top-up and monthly fees, where the issuer lists them.

Our ranking turns these into one estimated net cost. Fees we have not verified are left out and flagged, never counted as zero. The methodology explains how.

How many self-custody cards are in your country

Many cards are open only to some countries, so the list changes with where you live. Across all countries it ranks 16 cards. A few examples:

  • United States: 6 cards
  • Germany: 9 cards
  • United Kingdom: 7 cards
  • Brazil: 14 cards

Choose your country in the Card Finder to see the cards you can get, with a cost estimate for your own spending. The Finder also has a self-custody only switch, which shows the same set of cards.
